ITS AUCTION TIME!
The Rotary Club of Smithers is hosting its annual Community Auction again this year. This auction is one of the clubs main fundraisers and the money raised at this event is used in our community for scholarships, community projects and helping many local clubs and events.
This year we are very excited that half of all the auction proceeds will go to the Cycle 16 Trail Society to help with building a paved bike trail from Telkwa to Smithers.
Online bidding starts Nov 8th and continues until the final two days of the event on Wed Nov 23rd & Thursday Nov 24th.
ROTARY'S MOTTO IS SERVICE ABOVE SELF
Service in the community, the workplace, and around the world.
The first Rotary Club was formed in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, and as of 2012 Rotary International has over 1.2 million members in more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in almost every country around the world.
The Rotary Club of Smithers was formed in 1952 by members of the local business community. Gordon Williams Sr. is one founding members and he has now served the Club and the community for more than 60 years. The Rotary Club of Smithers has since grown in membership and diversity, especially over the past 24 years, since Rotary International welcomed women as members.
Goal and Core Values
The main goal of the Rotary Club of Smithers is to raise money which goes back directly into our community, as well into various projects around the globe. This is accomplished through Rotary’s Core Values of: Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership.
Our Club generates revenue through three main fund raising projects: the Rotary Charity Auction, our Fall Fair concession booth, and through the Celebrity Golf Tournament, in cooperation with the BV Foundation. The Rotary Club of Smithers wishes to thank the businesses of our communities for your continuing support for these events, as we could not complete our service projects without your support.
Past projects that have been completed by the Rotary Club of Smithers include the Trail to Town from Hudson Bay mountain to the base of Smithers , the Entrance way Kiosks at the East end of town and the Smithers signs on both sides of town, the Skateboard Park at Heritage Park, and most recently the Walking Bridge on the Smithers Perimeter Trail.
Recent projects the Rotary Club of Smithers are proud to be a part of include support of the: Rotary/Husky Main-Street Entrance Park, Bulkley Lodge Deck, Grendel Group Kitchen, purchasing a rescue sled for the Ski Patrol, Swimming Pool Access for the disabled, Books for Babies Literacy Program, and the Telkwa Kids Park Swing Set, among many others.
A big part of Rotary is the ability to give to numerous youth programs throughout our community. Some of the programs that the club has supported include Student Youth Exchange, Student Bursaries, and Adventures in Citizenship (where a youth is sent to Ottawa for 1-week).
The Rotary Club of Smithers is also highly involved in the support of international projects including: The Rotary Foundation; Polio Plus (eradicating Polio in every country); Child Focus Africa – Kenya; Shelter Box Program; and World Peace Fellowships, among others.
Some projects to look forward to in the future for the Rotary Club of Smithers include: an expansion of the Literary Program, and a long-term project for a Foot / Bike Bridge across the Bulkley River.
